Emerald

Emerald is from the family of Beryl, found very commonly in South America (Columbia and Brazil), South Africa (SA and Zimbabwe), Egypt, India, Pakistan, Russia and Australia. It is seldom ever found as a perfectly unflawed stone.

Most commonly green it can also be found in various shades and almost colourless. Measuring between 7-8 on the hardness scale, but can be very brittle and the flaws can create weaknesses. In the past emeralds have been known to be oiled to enhance the colours and help 'hide' major flaws, this is always a point to be taken into account when cleaning emeralds.

Other members of the Beryl family are Aquamarine (blue) and morganite (pink) The word emerald derives from the word for 'green gem'
